Solar chimney for ventilation
2023
Abstract
The solar chimney is an effective mechanism entirely dependent on solar energy to improve natural air flow in buildings, yet optimizing its efficiency at minimal costs remains a challenge. This research examined three design aspects – configuration, setup conditions, and materials – to offer a practical guideline for engineering uses.
In terms of configuration, a taller chimney structure, a suitable cavity width (typically between 0.2 and 0.3 meters), equal inlet and outlet sizes, and a height-to-gap ratio of 10-15 can significantly boost the solar chimney’s effectiveness. For installation conditions, a preferred tilt angle of 45 degrees is often recommended, and larger openings can improve performance, although the rate of improvement diminishes over time. Material selection should aim to maximize heat absorption and minimize heat loss, taking into account characteristics like thermal conductivity, absorption, emission, transmission, and reflection.
