Abstract:

The Harrier Jump Jet is a jet used for vertical taking off and landing, which mainly have been used at navy aircraft carriers. It can use airfields on land or fly from smaller aircraft carriers at sea. It combines the best aspects of a helicopter with those of a fighter jet. One of the biggest technical challenges in operating carriers was to launch and land aircrafts from a very tiny deck on the carrier, so with the nozzle at the end of the jet, a thrust force is provided to left the aircraft up. Many companies have developed this type of engine. In early stage, the thrust forces are somehow low comparing with the fuel consumption in this engine. Nowadays technology is playing a main role to provide more types of harrier jump jet engine that are good at taking off and landing and qualified for manipulating and wars.

In this project, a model of harrier jump jet engine is designed using an electrical motor, instead of combustion chamber, and a turbine. They are used to give thrust power. A swivel duct is to control the fluid flow, which play the main role of making the model taking off and landing vertically. This swivel duct is made of three bearing swivel ducts to direct thrust force downward and make it easier to direct the flow. The hover platform consists of a lift fan, and another two main fans will also be used as pitch control by varying fan’s speed. The two fans are placed at the wings to balance the body. The platform is designed to be approximately 1.3m nose to tail. The swivel duct is 0.5m and moving in 90 degree for vertical and horizontal thrust. The weight is approximately 5 kg.
